October 7, 2010--Day Eight!

PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK OUT ALL OF MY CROSS CANADA ROAD-TRIP PHOTOS HERE!
It's updated on a regular basis so make sure you check the album out!!!!

We’re on the move once again, this time actually west!!!! This means, now starts the actual trek westward towards our final destination of Calgary, Alberta.

We woke up early as the journey to the northern peninsula of Newfoundland is actually quite long. Our car ride turned out to be even longer as someone with greater powers than us decided today would be the day that the sky’s let loose. And, oh did they ever. Most of our journey, this turned out to be about an 12 hours car ride, were done in a pelting rain!

We stopped here and there, for gas and food, and candy and such and we continued on. We drove directly along the coast for many miles, and if the weather wasn’t so poor our view would have been spectacular. Oh well, we are, afterall on a 30+ day road-trip, so we can’t expect every day to be perfect. We drove into St. Barbe, where our ferry will be taking us to Labrador on Saturday, and then we continued on. Our campground was just off the highway, before St. Anthony, NL and so we carried on in. We looked around to find the owners/staff and no one was to be found. We also called to let them know we were going to claim a site, but no one answered.

Oh well, it’s still pouring with rain so we better set up camp before it gets even worse. I have quite a dislike for pelting rain, so I opted to sit in the car while my second half set up the camp. When it got to the difficult part of managing to keep the tent up and putting everything together I figured I better help. That done just that much faster we literally grabbed and threw everything we needed into the tent. We grabbed the sleeping bags, and water and any food we needed and we brought in our laptops since it was only 7pm but we desperately needed to write in our journals.

The rain still pouring outside, we tried to organize our sleeping quarters so that nothing was touching the walls. This actually tends to be quite difficult as two people manage to accumulate A LOT of stuff, and our tent is quite small.

The weather is definitely changing, and I can tell. Want to know why? With the weather getting colder, the more I have to wear when I go to bed.

The first night we started this trek, when we were in Moncton, I wore shorts and a tanktop, and had to unzip my sleeping bag to cool off. On this particular evening, I was wearing two socks, sweat pants, a tshirt, hoodie, toque and mitts, and I was curled into two sleeping bags with my winter coat and blanket draped on top. YAY! …… :S

Anyhow, that layering affect was just so that I could stay warm while trying to update my journal. I got two days complete and decided to scrap that idea and curl even deeper into my cocoon.

We decided to watch an episode of Castle of our laptops; ya, ya, I know---real camping eh? IT was real camping, except we were literally stuck in our tent because the rain was pelting down so hard.

After the show we decided we best try to get some sleep.

I was terribly worried the whole evening that I was going to freeze to death sleeping, and that I would wake up soaking wet. BUT I DIDN’T.

Our tent did surprisingly well considering the rain down-poured 80 per cent of the night. A few spots in our tent got wet, where we know they leak, and we both woke up warm and not shivering to death. Yay for a toque and mitts, and blankets…well…remember that list of things I had on or around me? That’s the one I’m talking about.
