October 6, 2010--Day Seven!

PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK OUT ALL OF MY CROSS CANADA ROAD-TRIP PHOTOS HERE!
It's updated on a regular basis so make sure you check the album out!!!!

Since we got tired from walking yesterday once we had breakfast and had paked-up and checked-out we decided to take a walk to Quidi Vidi Lake and Community. We walked around the lake and up the hill ….oh did we ever walk up a…uh hill…..

You know what sucks when you are out of shape? Walking up a hill? I think you get the point…

Anyhow, we walked around the lake, then went on a hike to find Quidi Vidi Battery, which there were signs for, but no actual direction. We thought we found the old battery, but maybe not. Either way, we somehow made it back to Signal Hill, this time hiking the opposite way up to that location.

Our very large loop returned us to our hotel where we found Jerusalem and plopped ourselves inside and were on our way to Cape Spear and Petty Harbour-a very small, unique fishing community.

Cape Spear was insanely beautiful and there were hidden army huts built into the hills where we trudged around. We viewed the old lighthouse, and walked around the new-er one, and then walked back down towards the water.

We thought we would go down to the beach, but after nearly getting blown away we figured we had better not.

Jerusalem helped us then go to Petty Harbour which we drove through, and then returned into the heart of St. John’s.

We found our way to our campground, put up our tent and organized our fire before we headed our again—this time to run some errands.

My other half was having trouble with his eyes…again..so we thought it best that we stop in at a walk-in clinic to get them checked. Our directions to the walk-in clinic, and our lack of actually ready building titles caused us to go past the place.

But, all things happen for a reason, and we drove right past a mechanic. Our friendly mechancics from Truro, told us we MUST get our tired tightened after like 500km and we had done wayyy more than that so we figured we better stop in and just get them tightened nonetheless.

That done we tried again to find the walk-in clinic. A few more wrong turns and a complete U-turn, we finally realized the walk-in clinic was IN the Dominion, which we had driven past at least 3 times.

My other half’s eyes were check out and he was cautioned not to drive anywhere isolated (you know, such as Labrador) if his eyes turned for the worse, as his eye symptoms could be very serious. We picked up some groceries while at Dominion then headed back to the campground where we actually had the opportunity to have a campfire and cook a meal. (First time on this trip so far!)

One our very first plans while in St. John’s was to get Screeched-In while in Newfoundland. We figured this was best done downtown.

What is a Screech-In you may ask? Well…you drink a shot of screech (dark rum) straight straight, which is made in Jamaica and imported to Newfoundland, and you say a few Newfie lines and kiss the Provincial fish—Cod!

The bartender had said the night before the do sreech-in’s every hour, so we thought we would head there around 8pm and then call it an early night. Once we got there, the bartender told us he wouldn’t be doing screech-in’s until at least 10pm.

Hmmm…crap! It was only like….7:40pm.

Meh! Whatever! We’re on holiday’s and we desperately wanted to become a true Newfoundlander and Labradorian, so we figured we would wait. We had a drink, strolled around and then just chilled out in Jerusalem until it was nearly 10pm.

Once we were in the “museum n’ pub“–Trapper John’s a blind gentlemen played the bagpipe and then we all lined up for our turn and becoming screeched in. We introduced ourselves, had a few laughs and then took our shot. We then had to repeat the Newfie verse…hmmm, which I totally can’t remember, but it was hilarious and then we kissed the ugh ….ass of a puffin?!

Yes! We did kiss a toy puffin. Trapper John’s does not have cod nearby, so this was the best he could do.

We had some more laughs, received our kick ass certificates, and the shot glass we used and then sat down for another drink.

A gentlemen then came on to sing for us, with only vocals and his guitar. He was... AMAZING!

Anyhow, we made it home…well to the campground and then called it a night.
