October 2, 2010--Day Three!

Day three was our day to see Cape Breton. The weather was still seriously miserable so we decided that we would do Louisbourgh first- and then maybe we could get to some of Cabbot Trail.

Our plan was to make it to Louisbourgh for when it opened at 9:30am—and that’s what we did. We toured the completely re-created fortress. Though the staff who dress up and re-enact that period were few and far between do to Louisbourgh’s off-season, we were still able to get the jist of the community that was in Cape Breton at that time.

We saw a firing of a musket, bought some bread that was baked fresh in the ovens that were also used back in the day, and we ate as a lower-class citizen where locals would have gone to drink, gamble and gossip.

We could have stayed there the entire day, and it would have been even more impressive when the “town” would be in full-swing during the summer months, but either way it was an amazing site to see.

The weather was still lousy so we decided to go to the Miner’s Museum in Glace Bay where we could look at artifacts and get a tour of an mine, which isn’t used anymore.

The tour was given by a retired miner, this particular fellow had spend 34 years mining, and 17 as a tour guide of the mine---mining was and continues to be his life!

We couldn’t make it to Cabbot Trail this trip, but it is most definitely put on our list of things to do later on. Because it was almost dusk when we left the museum, we went back to the campgound and made some supper. It was still crazy windy, so we ventured to the activity room and tried to microwave burgers.

It worked, sort of…well, we ate them because we were hungry, but it wasn’t the best way to cook a burger.

After that, we re-organized our car and called it a night.
