October 5, 2010--Day Six!

It's updated on a regular basis so make sure you check the album out!!!!

We are trying to budget, but this is terribly hard when we do not have any way to cook food, especially when we are in a hotel. Despite this, we still have money, so we thought we should stop at the hotel restaurant and get a big meal before our big day of site-seeing.

When we sat down near the window we were informed that there was a moose swimming in the harbour and the coast guards or wildlife people were trying to get him out. What we saw was a moose’s head and a zodiac behind him, trying to chase him across the bay, along the wall and towards the rocky area so that he could get back on land, walk up the road and head back into the forest. According to the staff at the hotel this was not a common thing to so. Moose do sometimes like to swim, but this particular moose had been swimming for a while. Right as our breakfast arrived the zodiac managed to get the moose ashore. He did have to call in another boat so that the two of them could weave the moose from behind the boats and along the bank so that he could climb out when he got the the rocks. As soon as they were sure the moose was heading up the road and back to the forest, and not back into the water the boats took off.

P.S-- I am trying to locate a news story regarding this moose in the harbour, but none can be found. Maybe I will have better luck in a couple days!

We had scoped out a visitor centre the day before when we were walking around so we figured we should probably just stop in there so we can get a better understanding of what to see while we are in St. John’s.

We started our little trek to that visitor information and stopped in a little park to take photos. A few photos later we realized one of our camera’s was flashing red with a soon to be dead battery. So realizing this we figured we better go charge it up and then head out, as it was still early in the day and we definitely were not far from the hotel…yet.

Back at the hotel we charged our camera batteries and ourselves and then headed out once again. We got to the hotel and they gave us a few ideas of things to see. Some could be done walking and other places would definitely need both. Good thing we have our feet and Jerusalem.

We figured we would do the walking stuff today, especially because Jerusalem was as safe as could be expected in the underground parkade at the hotel, and since we were checking out tomorrow, we figured we probably couldn’t leave our car there all day.

We roamed around the streets and found some churches, different types and of different ages—all as old as the ones we have seen in NB and NS.

We continued on and found the Basilica, and some quaintly coloured houses. A friendly St. Johner also informed us that the best view of the narrows of the harbour was a block down the road. So off we went. He was in fact correct, and we were able to get an impressive view of the blue water and ocean that surrounds Newfounland.

It was nearing lunch time and we saw a Moo-Moo’s Ice Cream so we thought what the heck, lets try it out. The little candy store had a crazy amount of ice-cream…probably at least a dozen different kinds to try. We both got a double scoop in a waffle cone and we continued on the see the Government House. We took some pictures of the building and the pretty flowers, and then walked back down the block, in almost a circle and reached our hotel.

We changed around some attire, and our carrying bags to make it easier to take a hike up the hill to signal hill. Signal Hill is where the first radio signal was received and that has changed the lives of everyone. We walked up the road, past DeadMan’s Pond and another one, which had about a thousand birds chilling out on it. Up the hill some more and around some bends we finally made it to the top of Signal Hill. We went inside, looked around the gift shop and then carried on upstairs where we learnt more about the first radio signal received.

When we had admired the view of the vast ocean ahead, and got a good chuckle of the sign that showed how for Montreal, London, Paris and the sorts were to where we stood we continued on. The wind had picked up and we were getting blown around. From the top of Signal Hill we could get on a trail that would wind down the backside of the Hill and so that is what we did. We slowly made our way down stopping to check out the scenery and admire the perfect shot of St. John’s Harbour.

It was ridiculously windy and we saw thousands of seagulls perched on the side of the cliff. We figure they couldn’t do much in the wind and so they thought it best to chill out where it was most safe. The side of the cliff worked just find for them.

When we got to the bottom we walked down a tiny street that placed us in between peoples houses. The street could only hold one vehicle at a time, and we noticed cars backing up and trying to turn as to avoid a traffic jam.

A couple turns later we were back at the hotel where we figured we would chill for a bit to figure out our next plan of attack.

We had saw a game shop the other day just down the street, but it was closed so we thought it best to go there before it got late. We did that and then headed back to the hotel where we took a nap to regain our strength.

For supper, we decided that this time we would go somewhere to see some of the night life—St John’s is said to have the most places to drink per square mile or something crazy. We wandered George Street again, this time intrigued by O’Reily’s –a Newfoundland/Irish pub which was having an open mic night.

We had some drinks, and a meal and listened to the great singing for the evening, and then we headed home to relax in the hotel.

Zzzzzzzzzz….
